Confessions of a first time mom: Little V and my love for waterplay was born out of a humble need for bath time to be a more attractive option than the toys in the playroom. I searched for options to bring to the bath room so that I could help Little V look forward to going to the bathroom for a bath, and to being cleaner (my need) and ready for dinner time (again, my need) 🙂
To entice her to head to the bathroom with minimal fuss and maximum enthusiasm, I tried sponge animals, sponge alphabets, shaving cream paint, lovely smelling shampoo, water guns etc…until I hit the nail on the head with WATERBEADS!
Her hands and feet loved the feel of the soft, bouncy, firm and smooth water beads. She held them in her hands and let them slide through, scooped them into containers, squished them, soaked her hands in their slippery and cooling textures, etc. She would regularly request for waterbeads play before bath time so it would be ok for her hands and feet to get wet. I was always careful not to let her bathe with them or bathe in the tub, because they remain essentially play materials for us.
Over time, we progressed to incorporate imaginative play with the waterbeads. We made Ocean Sensory bins out of them, so Little V got to hunt and fish for the sharks and the sea creatures in the water. She progressed to fishing for matching pairs of sea creatures. Counting the number of sharks in the Ocean bins. At other times she just wanted to fill little containers with them to see how they would roll around.
These waterbeads are really fun, you’ve got to try it to experience them for yourself. On a sunny island like ours, I can’t imagine why anyone would not love waterplay, especially with these amazing waterbeads of great colour and texture for you to begin exploring with. These waterbeads sensory bins helped me to comunicate ideas about our world with Little V. We discussed the ocean, sea animals, turtles, swimming, fishing, and anything that we can think of together. And we always have a tickling good time!
